I have a friend who plays guitar who tells me Rocksmith is really good and helps you play guitar, and can also do bass. The main focus of it seems to be teaching you either instrument, but since I'm very much past the beginner stage of both instruments is there anything else on the game that's worth buying it for?

I have it but I'm back to beginner, accidentally lost 3 hrs to it the other night though. Can be interesting trying to play songs you've never seen before at full pace with no idea what's coming next, especially when you don't know the song.
Also good if you have no one to practice with. Give it a go, you can pick it up used for about £25 I think.

It's definitely worth a go. Is it gonna teach you everything you need to know, not even close. But it will teach you some songs and some techniques.
Oh and it doesn't particularly like my fretless, but I put that down to the fact it's defretted and needs a string change as a result.
The new version (2014) has a better interface and actually gives you some direction about what you should work on. The downsides are that it doesn't really tell you what you are doing wrong and it presents notes in a weird version of tab that takes some getting used to.
I really just use it to force me to learn some new songs and build endurance. I also play guitar, so it helps me out there as well.

I'm to the point where I can sight-read most new songs of any difficulty. It's just a new notation, I can still do just as well with tab, but Rocksmith provides more immediate feedback. The arcade games are an excuse to practice technique in a way you might not have.
You can also take the game and an instrument to parties or hanging out with friends, play something to show them how the game works, then turn the difficulty down and hand other people the guitar and let them go.

It's fun, it's a good way to build strength, beef up on some technique, and you can use the cable to connect your bass to your computer if that's something that you've ever been interested in.
I've been playing bass (and a very little guitar)on and off (mostly off, LOL) for almost 40 years now, and the reason I'm nowhere near as good as I could have been after all that time is simply because I do not practice like I should, at all, never have. However, with Rocksmith, and now Bandfuse, I've been playing more in the last year, than I have in a very long time. I find it very inspirational and fun for this old slacker.
I have the original and Rocksmith 2014. Its benefits are pretty well explained here and in other threads but I have to add that in my opinion, the first version is close to worthless the interface was so bad. You spent more time trying to navigate than playing.
But the new version is a complete makeover and they got the interface right this time. Why on earth they decided not to show the note names is beyond me but it can now be considered a useful tool to add to your arsenal. Just avoid the first version.

I'm looking to pick up bandfuse. I enjoy rocksmith, but it teaches you in a limited fashion. You learn their way and thats it. Bandfuse teaches you to sightread tablature which is infinitely more useful.
If you guys really want something useful, check out Truefire.com. They have a ton of instructional data DVDs. They've got plenty in the guitar department. Not too many titles in the bass department, but what they have seems solid.
