Is Sheryl Crow really a bassist?

Anyway, Sheryl has never been afraid of playing somebody else's bass-lines and singing - cover songs.

A couple notes on My Favorite Mistake, she stole from the best[Stones], the song has an awesome bridge[something she really knows how to write], and her feel on that bassline is perfect for that song. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I get that. But no one said she was a bass player with identical or comparable skills to Jamerson. She's a bass player just as Jamerson is a bassplayer, just as I am a bassplayer...

because we all play bass. Heck, it's right in the name.


There is no skill level assigned to the name. You could play at a symphonic level or an "All Wipeout" tribute band. Carnegie Hall or your neighbor's deck. If you play a bass, you're a bass player.

I never hear anybody say Bob Dylan isn't a guitarist.

IF the thread title had been "Is Sheryl Crow on the level of bass playing as Vic Wooten or Chuck Rainey or Marcus Miller, I feel the answer could be a resounding "NO" and I myself would certainly have to join that group of low-lives!

A truly LUDICROUS comment IMHO.

This was said 11 years ago, but I'm not seeing what's ludicrous about this. A guitar player can by default play bass. Playing well is a different matter, but a guitar player can play the bass the same way a flautist can play the recorder.

She's more than just a Bass player. She is what they call a Singer Songwriter. She plays a variety of instruments, writes music, and sings and performs her own songs. With great success too. She is the full package deal for any manager/owner.

Come on! I wanted to see what she could do in the lead break which is very fast, of course they didn't play it.

In risk of waking up a very old thread with redundant information that might have already been shared - The original post featured the question if Sheryl Crow was the bass player on "All I Wanna Do". It is not. It's Kevin Gilbert. He was also her then-boyfriend and a great musician/songwriter as well. You should check him out if you haven't!

And having seen her live since posting in this very old thread, I can now vouch that she is a very solid bass player (who still has great taste in gear). Also, it is very handy to have a string of hit songs that everybody knows when putting together a set list. In fact, having recently read an interview in bass player with her, it turns out that she often uses bass as her instrument of choice when writing songs.
