Is Sheryl Crow really a bassist?

Yes, she sometimes posts under the handle "Multi-Millionairess Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist-Vocalist-Platinum Seller-Grammy-Winning entertainer as well as Bass Player with some really cool Basses"

I did a search and saw her last post was something along the lines of "I don't care what you Yazoo shmick-rods on TB think of me! I'm off to my private jet for a while in the Barbados, then home to begin my 55-City Sold-Out Tour"

Man, she's got some nerve, huh??

Honestly, I'm trying to make sense out of that post, but I can't. I wasn't aware that Sheryl was trying to do anything except play the bass parts she wants to hear in her songs.

Anyway, ask anyone whether they'd rather be a legendary bassist or a legendary singer/songwriter.

Just responding to the part "just like Jamerson".
Another way of looking at it - Jamerson (et al) contributed to writing/composing the songs, that does not make him a songwriter "just like Sheryl Crow".
I was NOT trying to take anything from her - just didn't think the comparison was quite apt.
For example, Joni Mitchel is a painter (and a very good one), but one would be foolish to say she is a painter "just like Picasso". Definitely rather listen to her over him too.

I don't want to pile on Sheryl (I am not a fan, but very much admire her multi-instrumental talents), but she is NOT a bass player "just like Jamerson" (just like goes BOTH ways, I've only reversed it for clarity of point).
The one is known as a very good pop musician, mostly because she is the front person, the other is a legend after playing anonymously on a thousand OTHER people's records and while I do think she out of the league musically from most of us on this site - she is quite good, HE is a LEGEND.

In that vein, if Jamerson is the standard we might as well rename this Talkmainlybassowners.com.

Crowe is a bassist. Duh.

She plays bass very well. Quibbling about being a "bassist" is a rather ridiculous pastime. Anyone who can play bass as well as she does, and especially when they can sing as well, is a solid bass player in my estimation.

I get that. But no one said she was a bass player with identical or comparable skills to Jamerson. She's a bass player just as Jamerson is a bassplayer, just as I am a bassplayer...

because we all play bass. Heck, it's right in the name.


There is no skill level assigned to the name. You could play at a symphonic level or an "All Wipeout" tribute band. Carnegie Hall or your neighbor's deck. If you play a bass, you're a bass player.

I agree 100% with your statement. It's all about the skill level of all bass players.
A lot of TB members can't see the forest for the trees.

And I doubt if Sheryl is asking questions like, "What bass note/s should I play with this or that chord?", "What are the rules for writing my bass-line?", "Do you need to play Roots?", etc...

Sheryl Crow played the bass guitar at Woodstock 99 East Stage (Rome, NY).

I have never played at Woodstock!

I've never played with Eric Clapton.

Sheryl Crow sang and played bass in Tokyo. I've never played in Tokyo.
(I've never been to Tokyo).

Anyway, Sheryl has never been afraid of playing somebody else's bass-lines and singing - cover songs.
