Is Sheryl Crow really a bassist?

Looks just like one of my nieces, the athlete and physical therapist one...

Well that's true if you work with Sheryl Crow, but maybe not so true if you're Stanley Clarke.

She plays in a band. That puts her ahead of a lot of people in the bassist line here at TB (me included).
Her band has paid gigs. That puts her ahead of another bunch of people in the bassist line here at TB.
She plays her bass in a band who's gigs draw thousands of fans. That puts her ahead of all but a select few in the bassist line here at TB.
I doubt those select few who are ahead of her in the bassist line here at TB are the ones posting she is not a bassist.
Draw your own conclusions.

Sheryl Crow might be thinking of a Sting song, "Don't Stand So Close to Me!"
Sheryl does a great job of singing lead and playing. She's a real bassist.

I don't think that Richard Bona e.g. will lose any sleep tonight, and I think Esperanza Spaulding is more attractive (to me).
But, YES- Sheryl Crow is a bassist.

Shoot, there is nothing wrong how she is handling that bass! I don't know if it has been mentioned, but Sheryl Crow was a public school music teacher before she went into show business. She has better music training than most of the people on this thread critiquing her.

By the standards of this question Paul McCartney was not a real bassist because he started on guitar, and he is a total non-gear head. There was a famous question about him being asked what strings he used. He said "I don't know, they come in a bag."
TB membership has always had a problem with female players that are more skilled and/or successful than they are. Realize a cold, hard fact : players like Tal, Rhonda Smith, Shar Petersen, Linda Oh, Missy Raines, and especially Tracy Wormworth and Me'Shell Ndegeocello can casually toss 98% of the posters on this forum under the wheels of any passing bus playing wise, with little or no effort. They're that good. It's because they spent years on stages, in clubs, in rehearsal halls, and in studios refining their craft instead of wasting time posting nonsense on message boards.
Sheryl Crow probably doesn't know or care if her strings have a round or hexagonal core or what gauge her speaker cable is, but she's up there playing bass on a stage, so she's a bass player, even if she doesn't have a head full of engineering facts. She just happens to have sung backup for Michael Jackson for more than one tour, plays more instruments than just bass, and writes well too. She's got most of us beat in that regard. But, even if she just played bass well in a band and wasn't a principal songwriter or leader, she's still a bass player. I don't know where you guys come up with this stuff.

Just examples that "a head full of engineering facts" isn't necessarily mutually exclusive to being able to play, in our world.
