Somebody just asked me to play for a ska band the other day actually. I wouldn't say no out of hand, because I've certainly heard good bands of that genre in the past, but they were awful.

I don't think there's any such thing as a truly dead genre in this day and age, just marginalized ones. Nostalgia is always a big marketing angle with music too, nothing stays "dead" forever.

I like the goofy ska more then this new take on ska with like screamo or gangstrap style lyrics and feel. Just cause you have a Horn section doesn't make you ska.

Well, since you like the Mongol800 vid I posted, here's another goofy Japanese song. I've been told it's ska, but it seems more like a fusion of ska, pop, hip-hop, and rap. No clue what to call it.



It may be classified as "just having a horn section".....

My friend introduced me to a whole bunch of good ska bands just a month ago. Now I have seen Dirty Heads twice (once when they played at my university and 2nd just a few weeks back; technically I guess they're considered "dirty ska"). Top that off we had the 20th Annual Ska Parade tour come through my school. Some of the bands that night were Tuesday After School (they're decent for there age) Queen P and the Delirians (freakin great), and Rude Boys Outta Jail (they rocked the house that night and had like 12 awesome guest singers). That Ska Parade was the best $5 door fee ever!

I missed the chance to see the Aquabats 2 weeks ago, but I'm seeing Streetlight and Reel Big Fish (both having only heard of them in the last 3 weeks) with a large group friends. Ska is totally growing on me

IMO, as the 90s stuff becomes more popular in the cover band scene, Ska will be in demand again, especially 3rd Wave and maybe some 2-Tone.

Ska is dead. At least to me it is. A lot of people I know that used to be in bands in the 90's went on to do more Skinhead Reggae.
