Is switching fingers on a note considered bad technique?

Some of my personal practice time is correcting for bad habits made early.

I find myself doing that occasionally. I think it's usually a case (for me at least) of not planning ahead far enough to know where my fingers should be heading.

Sometimes it is that, sometimes, it's the best way to get the job done. That and the thumb over the top on the E (or in my case B) string are time honored things that some folks look down on. Those people are generally lacking something better to do. If you can think your way around having to do it, good, but if you can't, it's not a crime - it's a technique.

As long as youre able to maintain the tonality, it doesn't matter. I'll often cycle from my pinky to my index (or vice versa), on root lines during guitar solos. One song I do this for is cracker man, by STP. During practice it was a way to count through the song, and test myself in cases of recovering from a mistake or hand fatigue...or what have. If you let your band mates know that's how you're going to play a certain line ...it can be an effective form of communicating with them.
