I have a somewhat newly acquired Epiphone Thunderbird IV Classic Pro. I love the bass. It feels awesome and I adore the look. However, there are some problems that I have experienced and after reading a bunch of other threads, I believe the problem is the 3 point bridge but I would like other opinions on this.
1) Uneven tone. The E and A strings sound different than the D and G strings. Maybe a little dryer and muted in comparison. It was extremely noticeable with fresh strings but that difference has been reduced as the strings get older. I have noticed that on the E and A strings, the thicker part of the winding by the ball end rests on the saddle because there is not enough clearance. Are the two linked or is that just a coincidence?
2) Uneven volume. The E and G strings are noticeably louder than the A and D strings and because I can't adjust each part of a pickup like on a precision bass, I am lead to believe that I would have the lower the A and D string. Once again, I cannot do this with a 3 point bridge (the A and D are a little higher than I want them to be).
I am aware of the Hipshot replacement and the Babicz 3 point bridge and while I prefer the asthetics of the stock bridge, I am wondering which of the two aftermarket bridges will solve the problems I have just mentioned best: guaranteed clearance of the winding and adjusting action
