Hi, I want to buy an Marcus Miller V7 Vintage Alder BMR 2nd Gen bass.
On Thomann they say that the bass weight is 12,4 pounds (5,66kg) an i think that very heavy...
Do you think that the bass is to heavy for me? i am 5,9 an my weight is 149pounds (68kg)

What do you think? i need som tips

That is on the heavy side, yeah. I'd pass and look for a lighter one. I'm surprised that got through Sire's weight screening.

12.4 is very heavy for a bass.

Weight is a very personal issue though. If you have back problems or any other physical limitations, it will be too heavy. If you're young (or old) and in reasonably good shape, it shouldn't be a problem. My opinion.

I had a 5 string V7 recently (had to send it back because of a defect). It's heavy and has some pretty bad neck dive, but if you get a wide padded strap it shouldn't be too bad. Depends on how much you play standing up I suppose. It is a fantastic bass despite the weight though.

From what is seen here on TalkBass, anything over 9.5 lbs is pretty much rejected. For many, anything over 9.0 lbs is rejected.

I have to believe they have some 9-pound swamp ash models out there...very few woods vary in weight as much as swamp ash.

OP at the end of the day what's comfortable for you is what's comfortable for you. That said, few of us would want to gig with a 12-pound bass.

Personally I can't even imagine the hell that 12 pounds on one shoulder would put my musculoskeletal situation through.

Good news, you have many many other choices.

They say their V7 2nd gen alder is 12.4 pounds? Really? My V7 2nd gen. ash/maple is just 8.5 lbs.

I was in a music store years ago and was checking out basses and a fellow bassist said " I won't play a bass unless it's heavy". I on the other hand, thought he plays every weekend meanwhile I play every Night, yeah I like lighter Basses.
It depends, your gig time, your fitness level, your age. These are all factors, and don't forget perspective. What's heavy for me may not be heavy for you.
Blues great Alan Hayes once told us " The older you get the lighter your equipment gets".

I have a 1990 EBMM SR5 that is 9.7 lbs. No problem.
I got the alder V-7 last year that is neck heavy and a little heavier overall. BIG PROBLEM.
It weighed 10.1 when I sold it to GC. They should make ultra lite tuners standard them and try to trim a little somewhere else.
I am 6 foot 1, about 190 lbs. decent shape, and 67 years old.

Only you can decide what is comfy for you. There are lots of people who actually prefer a more substantial instrument, and I find that it has little to do with how big and strong you are, or how big your hands are. You just like what you like.

That being said, 12lbs seems REALLY substantial (to me at least).

You're size has nothing to do with the weight that you can comfortably carry.

I am 6' 2" and wouldn't touch a 12lb bass if it was the last bass on the planet. Last year I asked the Sire Club about weight and several replies came back that there are lighter Sire basses out there. You've just got to find them.

You're asking the question which means you have doubts. Don't listen to your heart and pass on this boat anchor.

My main bass, the ESP LTD D-4, is about 12 pounds. Been playing it for almost 11 years with no issue. I think the main issue is strap length. I keep my bass in the same playing position as I do sitting down, and right under the right breast, and I find it comfortable. I'm also a gargantuan so maybe heavier basses work for me.

My #1 is a Warwick Streamer Stage II that weighs 11 lbs... I don't have qa problem with weight... Others do.

That is quite heavy yes, I'm 1m86 and 90kg and i have a 5,4kg and i find my bass heavy.

That is objectively very heavy and in the realm of vintage 70’s Fender/Gibson and Peavey T-40 territory. I wonder if they meant shipping weight including packaging (case/no case/gig bag…box and packing material?)

I had a Warwick as a young lad that was around 12, and as much as I loved it, I should have been playing a lighter bass. I have a 9.75 bass now, and I just got a new bass that weighs 7.25, and now I barely want to pick up the heavier bass. You don't appreciate the difference until you do.
