Is the Big Muff worth it?

A MXR M80 DI and a Muff are very different. The M80 DI yields a kind of aggressive distortion that some have described as nu metal. I use to own this pedal and liked the tone shapping but the distortion was not to my taste.

When it comes to Muff, I would strongly recommend the EH Bass Muff. It's an excellent pedal capables of doing many things well. It's also an excellent value for the price. I A/B this pedal against a Black Russian version 7 or 8 (the last one ever made in Russian) and they were very very close. I also A/B the same EH Bass Muff against the Wren and Cuff Tri Pie 70's and the Tri Pie won but not by very much, it was really on the scale of details. If you consider the Tri Pie cost twice as much, it makes the Electro Harmonix very attractive.

The Fuzzrocious Grey Stache is a fabulous Muff and it is my favorite out of that family. It is much brighter and less muffled than the other mentioned here.

The Way Huge Swollen Pickle is another very good option. This pedal is capable of great fuzz while keeping things articulated.

If you are new to the world of fuzz I would start with the EH, that company created that pedal and bang for the buck you can't beat it.

+1

I use one Russian Big Muff, and I think it's worth
and MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz is one of my G.A.S target :D

For heavy distortion I agree that the tone is sucked out using the M-80, but I prefer to use it as a lighter distortion. You can get a great tube type of sound from it by setting the blend at 11:00 and the gain at 7:00. Push the gain to about 10:00 and it a decent distortion, but not the best I agree.
