I will be putting these in a USA Peavey Forum P/J Plus (Poplar body Rosewood board) and often use the xotic tri logic outboard pre (very transparent just gives you more of you)
Based on the sets BestBassGear offers would the Wooten set or maybe one with the PA substituted for the PAX work or would another brand altogether best fit what I (think) am looking for. Here's what I am looking for:
Something that will cut through the mix but still produce a solid foundation:
I play contemporary Praise and Worship exclusively and a lot of it has a 80's rock vibe and some songs have a warmer but still somewhat modern sound. I almost always play with three guitars and keys and often use whole notes to fill space.
Modern but not too modern but definitely not vintage:
I never play slap or funk. Really just needs to do finger style rock and sometimes alt rock indie/Americana type feel.
No Amp:
I play exclusively direct to FOH
No Clanky:
Again won't be slapping don't want excess sizzle. I have read comments that the PAX has more of that the PA (though I liked the sound of the notes when Victor is playing melody in the demo video). It would be helpful if the demo had contained more accessible styles of playing. For instances I would have like to hear to running 8th note rock groove or a country grove.
Needs to maintain the basic character of a P bass:
I have already found that playing this bass, even with the 1995 active Peavey p/u's that came with it, that it is altering somewhat how I approach things rhythmically. Some places where I always used running 8ths I am approaching differently and I like that.
Doesn't need to do everything:
My other bass's are 97 jazz with older EMG's (last sound engineer loved them)Peavey Mill 5 with J/MM and my Conklin Groove Tools the I put passive Bassline soapbars in.
I do like the ease of set up for the EMG's (though I could install a set that requires conventional installation) and know they will provide a consistent and solid sound.
I just wanted to ask if there was anything else I should consider and if maybe the PA would be a better choice than the PAX before I pulled the trigger.
I guess I am prone to this sort of thing as I am in about week three of looking for hiking shoes
