Is there counterpoint in popular music

(When I say popular music I mean rock, jazz, not just pop music)

Just begun to be taught 4 part harmony in college, and it's very easy to see how composers from baroque to romantic periods used the system.

My question is whether counterpoint is used in popular music at all. I heard a jazz pianist say he learned species counterpoint and it really improved his use of harmony but I'm a bit puzzled how it helped him. Anyway I'm probably just missing something really obvious so if someone knows something about counterpoint in popular music I'd love to hear it

I don,t have any idea for POP music ... I have some ideas for Jazz especially on the album Line By Line by John Patitucci. I perfer 4 parts harmony that are like 4 leading voice that could work alone but create a cool harmony while together

Short answer, yes.

Slightly longer, Bill Evans is the first jazz player who comes to mind when thinking of counterpoint. Also, a walking bass line under a soloist is counterpoint.
