Is there still a generation gap?

The underlined part - just small doses so we are only slightly bitter and unhappy. If life doesn't duty-test you, you might always wonder if you are up to the challenge. Or fail because you assume you are with no data to back it up.

Even the Boomer group has some variance - early Boomers are more like their parents and probably have spawned fewer spoiled brats than later Boomers. And some of it is also general society that has changed - kids of today have virtually no fear of adults, a relatively new social dynamic.

My grandpa was scandalized by RHCP at the Super Bowl. He likes people who "just stand there and sing."

Back in the old days, parents could come home, slide off the dinosaur and tell you no more telephone. Or, "you're grounded". Or, "you've got chores to do". I think young people today are less considerate of people around them because basically nobody's ever put a good boot up their ass. Physically or metaphorically. Today you can't "force"(no dinner, you're grounded until,etc.) a kid to go mow the lawn, they'll drop the dime on you and claim child abuse.

I miss hearing someone tell their kid, "you mouth back to me one more time and I am gonna snatch you bald!". Even better when they did.

If the enforcement of child abuse laws limits our entertainment value, perhaps there's a generation gap on what's considered entertainment.:|

Children not taught that dogs bite get bit more frequently. If you have nothing else to grab than your child's hair to stop them from running into the parking lot - please grab their hair. Legally there is a gray area between abuse and discipline, it hings upon intent of the parent and methods used.

Undisciplined children or adults are not entertaining.

I can listen to metal for me the deal breaker is hip-hop or whatever you call it. I don't like the current pop bands too much but then I never did like pop music too much.

I ran into an old friend on the way to work. He plays drums in a metal band. When I told him my band turned down a gig playing country music he said that country is the new metal. :confused:

I always have to laugh a little when people bitch about current pop music as if it's a new phenomenon. I've heard some pop from the '60s that was every bit as horrid as the stuff coming out now.

Country is the new metal??? What????

New country (1993-now) is pop music with a faked southern accent.

I don't remember my parents ever phycially abusing me. My father had a mean backhand that seemed to come out of nowhere at the dinner table. If he took his belt off and started snapping it together it was time to behave with no questions asked. He never had to actually use that belt just the threat was enough.
I had five siblings and my mom would sometimes line us up at night and give us all a spoonfull of cough medicine "so we wouldn't catch a cold." Back then cough medicine had codiene in it. Hmmm ... maybe that explains some things. :p
I don't know if any generation is better than any other. I do know that each generation has been saying the next generation are a bunch of brats for centuries.
A friend told me that there is some writing from ancient Egypt that says just that. I couldn't find it on the internet. Anyone ever hear of it?

Haha! I get people who's eyes sort of glaze over when I tell them I'm playing rap. I usually clarify for them, "no. no, not the b##ches & hoes kind". If I tell them,"sort like a cross between Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine with a positive message" they're usually like "oh, ok." There are shades of gray to many of these things. Hip-hop artists rap, but not all rappers are hip-hop. Mainstream hip-hop is tightly linked to worldviews and behaviors that outsiders find unsettling. For good reason imo.

Hip-hop is largely a culture, rap is a vocalization technique, like scat singing or sound poetry.

Classic rock ala Skynard sounds more "country" to me than New Country.
