Is there such a thing as a considerate smoker?

I heard someone on a radio say that there is no such thing as a considerate smoker (unless they neve smoke in a public place). That the minute anyone smokes around anyone else (who doesnt smoke or doesnt want to smoke then) they are, by definition, being inconsiderate.

What do you think?

I think it only inconsiderate if the people around the smoker ask the smoker to stop smoking in their area, and the smoker refuses. If the people don't mind then the smoker isn't being inconsiderate imo

Especially if you're one of those "leave the butt where you finish it" jerks. People leave 'em on the sidewalk in front of my house and it really P!$$3$ me off...some days I'd like to track the miscreant/s down and force feed them their trash.

Yeah, it shows how considerate they are. I also get to see how considerate they are when they show up to the hospital all the time and let the tax payers pick up the tab.

I don't smoke in any enclosed public places or around or in proximity to non-smokers, what I inflict on myself I don't expect others to endure, if there is no bin I'll find one or keep it until I find one. But if I was going to point the finger for real pollution, that would be with the corporates, they would take some beating.

Reminds me of the time I saw a person throw a cigarette out their car window. It landed pretty close to me, so I picked it up. They were at a red light, so I threw it in their window and said "I think you dropped this."

If you ask someone to stop smoking or take it elsewhere and they do, they're being considerate. If they flat out refuse, then I see it as being inconsiderate. And down right irritating.

A shocker for me was when I went to France. In Paris (and no doubt the rest of Europe), smoke wherever you want, if you're in a long line like I was, they have no problem blowing it in people's direction as they're talking, et cetera.

Definitely something I hadn't seen in a long time.

So if, for discussions sake people are waiting under a bus shelter, would a considerate smoker light up and then wait to see if anyone complains or would they first ask if people minded?

Nah! They're trying to stir people's emotions with a broad, sweeping statement, or overgeneralization about smokers. One size does not fit all...
I was one of the considerate smokers, and now I'm a very tolerant ex-smoker. Some of the least tolerant people were once smokers themselves.

That 'least' group should be ashamed of themselves.

Your supposed to ask first. It's proper smoking etiquette.

I only smoke at band practice, at bars, and at the cigar shop I hang out at, all places where other people are already smoking, so I like to think I'm a considerate smoker.

If I'm outdoors in close proximity to others, I will move at least 20 feet away prior to lighting up.

If I'm outside smoking and someone walks up to me, I'll turn my head when exhaling.

I've been known to come home with cigarette butts in my pocket since I refuse to litter.

IMO nonsmokers can be just as inconsiderate as some smokers. I've had a friend demand I not smoke on my property when he came by to jam. That kind of ticked me off so I told him pi$$ off. Now that was my property though if i was the guest at his house I'd have no problem not smoking.

Exactly if I go somewhere I ask before I light up. But at my home I smoke when I want.
