Not true. I throw away my cigar when it's too far gone to smoke any more and I don't smoke in public. Almost every smoker I've seen wether it's in LA, Phillidalphia, Ocean city, or Denver the smokers always throw away their cigarette butts or cigar stubs.

i do maintenance at a strip mall, i can sweep up every cigarette butt today and by tomorrow it will look like i didnt sweep up at all. this is no exaggeration.

people put there cigarrettes out on the brick walls next to ash trays provided.

i wouldnt say all smokers are inconsiderate, just the vast majority

Not true? In the midwest, it's pretty normal, but much easier to see at night. I usually spot a dozen people doing this on my way home from work at night and traffic is pretty minimal.

Man, I don't know where you hang, but in those places, and every other place, I'd peg the percentage of smokers that just drop 'em where they stand or toss 'em out their rolled down car window is in the 80%+ range.

Yeah, they "throw away" their butts...right in the street or sidewalk.

I know it's a "small issue" compared to other pollution sources, but it's one that bugs me to no end, because it's LAZINESS in action. If you are going to have a nasty, dirty habit, please don't force everyone else to share it's by-product with you.

It is a vile, disgusting habit, and the only person I consider a "considerate" smoker is one that doesn't exhale his or her noxious smoke in my area.

Sure. If someone is willing to go outside in the rain, and leaves their buts in a ceramic pot filled with sand, then I think they are being considerate enough.

My roommate is a smoker, and I've never had a problem with him smoking. Then again, he never smokes in the house, and his butts always end up in our fake potted plant.

I have lots of smoking friends who are considerate about asking before lighting up, but I don't personally know any smokers younger than 70 that go out of their way to properly dispose of the butts. Also, despite a state-wide ban on smoking in bars, I can't walk into many of my local bars without seeing a group of people smoking inside--10 feet away from the outdoor smokers' deck/patio built solely to accommodate them. That's pretty damn inconsiderate, though only a very small minority are guilty of it.

I grew up in a pretty smoke-heavy extended family, so second hand smoke doesn't bother me at all until a few hours later when I've left my smoking buddies and still smell it on my clothes.

A part of the issue, IMO, is that many smokers do not understand just how disgusting the smell is to non-smokers. While I sincerely do appreciate the attempt at being considerate we can still smell the smoke outside.

Many smokers ARE inconsiderate. In my area smoking is not allowed 6 metres from an entrance of a public place... but many people still do. They light up right under the no smoking signs and their cloud is everywhere.

When I have to walk thru that cloud with my 6 year old son I tell him quite loudly to hold his breath as smokers are poisoning themselves and him and I make a big deal out of it. Its pretty funny. That may be obnoxious but it gets the point across to the inconsiderate smokers.

I hate all this anti-smoking discrimination today. Its a smell, get over it. I go out of my way most times to stay away from non-smokers, usually walking down the street a bit, holding in a drag as someone walks by, even putting it out around kids on occasion, but smoking is so demonized people take it as their personal crusade to hassle smokers whenever possible, and its socially acceptable. As smokers, we're immediately always in the wrong it seems and people are always quick to judge. No, that whiff of smoke you get when you walk by me smoking is not going to give you cancer, again, get over it, or keep walking.

And about the healthcare, I'm pretty sure that tax wise, with how highly cigarettes are taxed, we put in a helluva lot more than we take out. As a matter of fact, your welcome. I'm sure us smokers are a pretty damn good source of income for our government.
