I agree that you must try various bases before you buy one.
There are so many usable inexpensive basses out there, but you would be best served by an instrument that feels good to you, rather than picking one by brand. At least do enough hands-on research to get a good idea of whet the differences are and then make your choice. There are more good basses of different types available right now then ever before, but an instrument is a very personal thing, and the wrong one for you is the wrong one no matter who made it.
