Is this a good deal?

I'm looking at this Rickenbacker copy under the "Logical" name. It's $500 bucks and it's got this custom paint job with 250k pots and orange drop caps (I have no idea what these are). Is this a good deal? I'm previously a guitarist wanting to try playing bass. Thanks

It's hard to find a good "deal" on ric copies because even crappy copies seem to command prices far beyond their quality. If you are set on a ric copy then $500 is probably pretty close to the original sale price for this bass which retailed for about $600. I think they might be discontinued now, in which case $500 is probably what it'd fetch because of the relative rarity of such instruments. This is because Ric sues the dickens out of anyone who tries to make them.

If you're a guitarist coming to bass their are probably equally good bases for a couple-hundred less than that.

I would get a fender, if they felt comfortable in my hands. The guy who plays bass in my band left his jazz at my house overnight and I find them to be very uncomfortable. This bass has other modifications I like, I'm not sure if I'm completely sold on the colour, tho...

The Jazz has quite thin neck, Precision neck is a bit wider.
I'm guessing you can't to play the Rick copy? It might be OK, it might be no good at all.
Best advice is to get to a music shop, try out a few basses. Get a feel as to which type of bass you feel comfortable playing.

I was at a music store where I blindly bought a squire jazz 70s model. I returned it a few days later. I like precision necks, I just don't like the sound or body shape. I've seen a lot of pictures of rick necks and they look comfortable. So, I think this would be ok, plus I love their sound. I'd try a real rick, but no music stores near me sell them, not even copies.

You can buy new Rick counterfeits for about $300 direct from China, Logical charges more for them and sells them domestically. The electronic mods are worth about $8. The paint job is done at factory for Logical I thought, but I may be wrong on that.

You consider if it is worth it but I would offer no more than $200 if I was buying it.

Thanks, I didn't know about the mods. The paint job was done by a local artist, that's what I saw in the ad and I saw it on the artists page.

One other option worth considering is the venerable Peavey T-40. It's a VERY heavy bass, but it's got very high build quality, has the most ric-like sound of any non-ric bass I've ever played and can be had for around $3-500. It's also got a very comfortable precision width neck with a slightly smaller profile than the classic p-bass baseball bat.

Note that it hasn't been made in a few decades, so it would be a used instrument, but I guarantee the quality is far ahead of any import-ric-copy and since it's USA made it will hold it's value and even appreciate over the years.

You're buying it for looks...I mean, you don't care if it sounds like a Rickenbacker, right?

If you are looking at a $300 bass - color should be the last thing you think about - just sayin'.

Logical is a company from Vancouver, BC Canada. I have tried a couple of these Fakenbackers before and they are not bad but expect the bridge pickup to hum like a mofo!

New they were selling for around $600 CAD when I tried them in a couple of stores in Montreal about 3-4 years ago. FYI, 3-4 years ago the USA was recovering from the 2008 recession and the Canadian Dollar was roughly on par with the US Dollar back then.

A bit pricey IMHO.

Rather than buying a counterfeit, where you have no idea of the actual quality, why not buy from a legitimate company? Also, a bolt on would be easier and cheaper to maintain and keep in playing shape. Plenty of good stuff available in that price range and less used AND new.

Just sayin'.
Logical is a "legitimate" company, though they clearly violate Rickenbacker's trademarks.

How does it sound?
It's no good if it doesn't sound like a Ric.
