Is this a good price for fret installation?

I have a neck with blank slots and want to take it to a luthier to get frets put in. Two quotes I got were 275 and 225. Are these reasonable prices? I've never had to get something like this done before so i don't know how much of it is "you get what you pay for" or not.

Also, total sidenote I just thought of, does anyone know how large Warwick brass frets are in terms of jumbo, or medium jumbo terms?

You got 2 quotes, both within $50 of each other. I'd say that's pretty much the going rate in your area. It varies from place to place.

I would say they are RAILROAD sized frets haha

Those are reasonable prices. Just find out who the fret 'guru' is in your area and see if that person charges substantially more. Fretwork and fingerboard prep can really make or break an instrument so be as picky as your wallet will allow.

Also, are you planning to use the same brass alloy frets that Warwick installs or are you going to use something more standard like nickel-silver or stainless steel? The Warwick brass alloy is noticeably softer (probably the reason you're having to refret in the first place) but does impart something to the sound of the instrument. If you're not going to use brass alloy, I would recommend stainless steel since it will last much longer.

Don't worry too much about the size. Your tech should be able to measure the existing frets with calipers and give you a couple of choices.

If you want the brass look with better durability try the gold EVO fretwire at LMI. It is rated halfway between nickel and stainless in hardness and polishes up smooth and beautiful. I use it for most of my builds and couldnt be happier.
