Is this a scam? (Used Dingwall NG-2)

I just bought this Dingwall NG-2 on ebay: Dingwall NG-2 5-String Bass (Mint) | eBay

I sent him a message asking for the history of the bass.

This was his reply:

"Hey lunachild, I am the sole owner. Bought it from BassDirect, never giged with it, and it has no issues. I do have seller feedback for a couple of basses, just not in the past 12 months. If you scroll down on the feedback page you'll see them.

Because I haven't sold on ebay for a while, they put a hold on the funds, which is why I issued a refund. I'll probably use Reverb instead. If you still want the bass, we could do a paypal business transaction. Same protection, just not within eBay. Cheers."

I don't understand why he would need to do that. Is this a scam tactic, or is this legit? His ebay history does show that he's bought/sold basses before, so I'm inclined to believe it's legit, but I can't be sure.

Most likely not a scam.

What the seller described happens on feebay a lot and there was a thread recently where a fellow TB member reported the same issue - he was the seller - and followed the same course of action.

I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to wait for their $$$ for three weeks.

The fella doesn't want to pay ebay fees along with the PayPal ones.

Under PayPal "Goods/Services" he'll pay 3% + 30p or 50 cents if in the States. Don't know what eBay take in fees but could be 5%,they also take a cut on the shipping.

There's also the time waiting for funds, "Goods/Services" it's in his account, eBay it takes a while.

"I don't know why ebay put a hold, my only guess is that I haven't sold something in a while. My issue is I can't wait 21 days for the money, which is how long it said it would take. If you checked my feedback you can see I sold a $1600 bass with no issues. And the only way to scam someone would be through a friends and family payment, since paypal can't refund those.

That's why I mentioned a merchant transaction, so you'd have the same buyer protection ebay offers. With that, there's literally no way I can pull a fast one, as paypal would just give your money back. Would be pretty pointless for me since I would end up right where I started."

Honestly, what he said makes sense to me. Seems legit.

This bass was associated with a seller on Reverb. IIRC, he was "selling" another Dingwall that is currently owned by another TB member. I think the photos in this Ebay ad for this bass may have been lifted from a sale here as well. I know for a fact I recently saw this listed with a woman as the seller.

I think it is a scam bud. I’d hate to point Fingers in the wrong direction but this seller has posted others.... including one currently in my living room which makes lean towards you getting your money back and steering clear. Pay a little bit extra and find one else where. It’s also price pretty good. Maybe too good for a minty bass.

Looks like the same scammer that’s been doing the rounds on the Dingwall thread. Cancel the transaction and get your money back and move on. The guys in the Dingwall thread can likely provide links to this scammers other listings.
Even if this wasn’t a scam (and I’m 99% sure this is) it’s the sellers problem if PayPal won’t release the money.

Not saying it's legit, but what is the scam if the seller is refunding the funds? Is it truly that he doesn't want to wait for the $$ to be released? Wouldn't it be easier to just keep the money?

It happened to me , had the high / ending bid on ebay for a GB amp. The seller contacted me and asked me to cancel my bid because Ebay was hold funds until shipping. Seller didn't want to ship without getting paid although it was perfectly fine for me to pay in full and wait/hope that the seller would ship it. Turns out the seller was a TB member offered to sell me the amp but since he wouldn't honor the first commitment I didn't trust him to honor the second.

happened to me before as a seller. EBay has some odd rules. Hadn’t used it in years. Sold a bass gig bag for $70.00 and they put a hold on it cause I hadnt used EBay for 2 years...

The scam is to get you to play outside of Ebay, so Ebay wouldn't get involved if you get defrauded. Also, it turned out this guy's been banned from talkbass for having pulled multiple shady deals in the past (they guys in the Dingwall Owner's Club thread told their stories, and I also got a PM about it.). It makes no sense why he would use the same set of photos from the ad he posted here in 20015, where he already sold the same bass, unless he's trying to scam somebody.

He’s right, that’s literally the whole point of using PayPal.

Someone this dishonest refunding the $$ didn't make sense to me.
