Is this an EQ-able tone??

That tone is more than just an F1-X. Sounds like he has some type of distortion effect going on there.

EDIT: In the wiki you linked there's references to a Sansamp BDDI. The type of drive that's being played in the youtube link sounds a lot like what I remember my old BDDI and PBDDI sounding like. That might be a good place to start.

Regardless, that tone sounds fantastic in that context.

It sounds like overdrive (possibly from the preamp?) and a lot of high mids to get that aggressive tone. Disclaimer: I don't have my headphones on (built in laptop speaker).

Edit: I agree with silky, I don't think the F1-x can produce so much overdrive and the sansamp could fit the bill.

Ill have to check the Sansamp out, I was thinking of channel 2 on the Aggie, and I actually am working on acquiring a Spector, but not the p/j, I went with the TW version (soapbars)

Do you guys think that a Sansamp VT could create that tone as well? I ask because I'm on a tight budget at the moment and the VT is a bit cheaper

Most people find that the VT sounds better and it's cheaper because it doesn't have a DI so if your not using it for the DI the VT will probably be the better choice.

Edit: Can someone please tell that silky smoove guy to stop typing so fast and making me sound like a complete pigeon :spit:. This is the second time in this thread okay!!! enough is enough :bawl:

Looks like its time to begin the hunt for a VT bass... Although I'm gonna give fresh rounds and some creative eq a shot for my show on the 13th... The hamfisted I got covered, but I generally leave my eq flattish (roll of the treble and high mids a touch, thats it) so I'm kinda lost as to where I need to start in that department

Pluck/slap the string down into the pickup? I feel like I do usually play fairly hard, I've broken a couple strings, but I cant seem to get that... If its a technique I can lock down that would be awesome... I hear similarities tho to Paul D'amour's Tool tone which is pickstyle so I dunno...

I've been getting a very similar tone running my Bass VT with a slight bass boost and my Squier Deluxe Jazz V with mids (1khz) boosted on the bass's pre to 75 or 80% (with 50% being middle).

Play pretty hard with fingers, run both pickups, boost at about 1 khz (on your Aggie, that means boost high mids, they're 800 hz.) Keep the mids / tweeters on your cabs on and tweak your amp's EQ. (+ Low + high maybe.)

Its a hi-mid thing with some overdrive as described above I reckon. Also a VT and EQ tweak is good advice to start your search - +1.

l bought the VT modded into a rack unit shown below from the classifieds here on TalkBass - pretty nifty - it has a lot of character in it.

Foz, that's way cool! I'd heard of them but never seen one done!

Anyways, I forgot to mention this: Roll of the bridge pickup as necessary. That high-mid boost and neck pickup will give you a very Precision-like tone. With both pickups on it makes for a super growly jazz.

on that reunion tour, rob was quoted in bp as using a pod x3 live into a power amp and into two 810's. and he said he used the pod because his recorded tone is a blend of a fender bassman and a marshall plexi, and he said the pod had that exact tone. his sound is definitely more marshall and fender than ampeg, for sure.

i love the vt, but if you can cop that tone without buying new stuff, all the better. buying new stuff has always been a last resort for me. except for basses. went a little nuts over the past few years with the cheapos.
