For sure, the thing is gorgeous, but for 30,000? I think I'd settle with a regular 4001 or 4003.

It's certainly a beautiful example of a (very) early Ric, but seems that it would be more of a museum piece than a player. Worth the $$$ he's asking? Only if someone is willing to pay that much...

An instrument's dollar value does not depend on your opinion of how good or bad it is. If a single person is willing to spend that kind of money on it, then it's worth that much.

The problem with guitars like these are that it is only worth $30k if someone is willing to pay $30k for it. And in these hard times, I don't see that happening. All of us have felt the sting as we have tried to sell our beloved, unique, rare instruments.. only to find that we are getting signifacantly less than what we would have gotten a year ago. It's a shame, but that's reality.

Those old Ricks make nice collector's items but they are not players. The 60s Ric basses have weak necks and weak pickups. I had a 60's 4001 as my main bass for 35 years. Then I got a 73 4001 and it was a better player. Then I got an 89 4003s5 and it was better yet, then I got a 2001 4003 and it was even better. Vintage gear with weak necks and weak pickups may be an investment but they are not players. I sold off all of my vintage gear a few years ago for better playing basses.

As an instrument to play, of course it's not worth 30k. As a collectible, it is worth whatever everyone else thinks it's worth.

Its the same thing and its taking the p**s.

While its a beautiful instrument i very much doubt if anyone would pay that sort of money and even if they did i very much doubt they would actually play it.

A collector would lock it in a case and leave it, why would they do that with an instrument that begs to be played and sounds as good as they do.

Each to their own i suppose but no guitar in the world is worth 30.000 regardless of who owned it etc.

I actually own a football shirt that is signed by David Backham, does that mean its worth thousands of pounds ( i dont think so)
