Like "real" singers don't have that problem. Ever listen to Exciter by Priest? How can you possibly tell what he's saying? The chorus of "The Evil That Men Do" by Maiden?

The difference here is instead of saying "wow, he's growling so low! He's awesome!" you're going "oooohh!! So high pitched! He's awesome!"

Ya I know you can't always make out all the words, even with good singers. But, that is often because of the phrasing, diction or lack thereof, and speed of the song. But at least I can make out most of them.

Also, singers like the ones from Priest and Maiden, don't always sing high pitches. they hit a lot of mid and low tones too, they just do it with actually singing and not makeing untalented gutteral noises contantly.

Don't get me wrong I like my share of screaming in rock/metal. Just do it good, and don't act like death metal style vocals actually sound musical or take any skill. You can scream and still sound musical and do it on pitch, and sound tough.

My favorite record, in which the singer doesn't cross the line but hits that "tough nerve," is Anthrax stomp 442.

O and the people in the audience show don't sound just the same because it's in chorus.

My drummers younger brother started a death metal act and could do the death metal grunting just as good as any of them the very first time in front of a mic.........just like anyone else that would try it.

If you like death metal vocals thats great. Enjoy. Just don't try to convince people with straight up BS that death metal vocals are hard to do and actually take training, like someone who actually sings and has worked on their voice just like an instrument and learned to control it.

Death metal vocals and actual singing is the difference between someone just picking up a guitar and just banging away on it in time, and a player who has at least some level of mastery over the instrument.

If you believe otherwise you are either fooling yourself or your ears can't hear the difference, or you could give a crap about the vocals.

Not at all. I can dig on almost all music, and I say that with all honesty. Instrumentally, they were doing some out there stuff... I friggin' love out there stuff. The screaming was out there... but maybe it should have been a bit more in there... or less in there, I don't know.

I like the music, but then again, I like free jazz, weird hardcore/math metal, and noise rock. It's not for everyone, but there is a crowd. I've noticed Talkbass isn't a very open minded crowd as far as music goes... if it isn't smoothed out, Talkbass usually isn't down with it. Questioning this as music is ridiculous... are abrasive/abstract paintings art?

I like musical boundaries to be broken, at one point, Bebop was considered to be noise.
