Some plywood DOES sound awesome! I'd point out that the shells of most high end drums are all plywood. So basically it depends on the plywood. Usually composition boards aren't so hot, although I've got a Carlo Robelli 8 string that really sounds pretty good even though the composition body is total crap. It took 3 inch strap button screws to get them to stay in the body and not pull out.

I agree with everyone else. The value of any bass is how it sounds/plays. To evaluate a bass based on the name on the headstock etc. is really the wrong way to go about it. Hey, my SX bass I got for $169 sounds plays awesome. And I paid $175 for the 8 string so even though you may have not got the buy of the century, if you are happy with the sound/playability of the bass, your cost is in the right range. Anyway, sometimes playing a fake can be cool because some people will try to listen with their eyes!

He may not have known it was fake. Generally if people are trying to scam they will copy something worth more than $250.

Well, when you can clearly see the induvidual layers of wood it does give it away.

That's a really poor quality inkjet decal. There are WAY better offset printed options out there.

There's only two Squier models that cost that much, and they aren't middle of the road. "Middle of the road Squier" is a Standard, and they are easy to obtain secondhand for $100.
