Is this guy nuts?

That's an investment bass. A shame, sort of... Nobody who owned it would dare take it out of the house for fear of damaging its value. As for the price - if it's a legitimate factory special color (I wouldn't know, but have never seen that color in an old bass) it might be a completely unique item. That can lead to astronomic valuation. But, as Bruce pointed out, this is the worst possible time to be selling a high ticket item whose value is based on how high a bidder is willing or able to go... :bassist:
 
It might be hard to establish the originality of that finish without some provenance, IMO. I'm not in any way challenging this particular bass, but it's not a purchase to made casually if I understand the extreme rarity of fender sparkle finishes, especially since there is reason to believe this finish was farmed out by fender to a third party, at least on occasion. it would have had to be a custom order and there don't seem to be many around at all.
