Is it possible to use a gel stain (like minwax) before finishing with tru oil???

I would like to darken the swamp ash body i have before finishing with the tru oil...

Any recommendation would be appreciated...

As long as you let the stain fully dry, you should be alright.
Tru-oil will 'darken' the ash too, may want to test on a piece of scrap to be sure.

Tru oil might blend with the stain and cause a cloudy finish. You might be better off dyeing that nice piece of ash and then apply the Tru oil.

Was not sure of the compatibility of a "Minwax" gel stain wit the tru oil...

I had a feeling that their might be a "bleeding" issue...

Off to test the wood now...

I've done it on alder. It works fine. As recommended, test on scrap to make sure you like the results. I'm not sure how the oil and the stain could cause a cloudy finish, but a coat of shellac in the middle should prevent that.

Tru-oil is varnish and it works just fine over shellac. I've never had a problem with putting it over stain, but if someone were worried about it somehow mixing with dry stained wood and doing something ugly it would be a good peace of mind kind of step.

looks like the tru oil on the ash will give me the color I am looking for...

Planning on finishing the body with t.o. and protecting it a bit with some clear poly...
