Is your couch covered in plastic?

Is it just shedding you're trying to prevent or are there other issues?

I think...Living Room furniture was a major investment & the plastic protected said-investment for several generations.


Furniture in the den/family room was treated differently.

But yea now that I think of it I did throw a clear heavy duty shower curtain liner over it cuz when my spoiled cat and I moved into the latest place 3+ years ago, she got kinda pi$$y that there were other cats and a big dopey dog that lived here, so it took a few months for her to knock that off. *cue the cat recipe jokes* but they better be darn tasty >^..^<

We bought a new couch a couple years ago. I have it covered in layers of blankets, and couch covers. We have two cattle dogs (3rd eventually), that love to "slab" on the couch with me.
There's still a new couch under there, I see it every month when I wash all the covers. It would have been trashed had I not done this since day one.

We bought a leather couch and that handles most of it. The one in the basement the kids grew up with was never covered and still looks pretty good.

Couches are to be comfortable on. Covering them with plastic defeats their purpose.

I remember seeing a comedy routine once, it was either Billy Connolly or George Carlin, talking about farts and how there must be thousands of farts trapped in the cushion over the years. It was absolutely hilarious. I tried to find it but to no avail.

We have a no farting on the couch rule in our house.

I know someone who covers his couch with a sheet when no one is around. He also covers his floor with a drop cloth and checks to make sure his door is locked at least 4 times when he leaves his house. He also checks his stove and all his sinks when he leaves.
He uncovers everything when he has visitors.

The couch in the music room is 100% genuine Naugahyde. It may as well be plastic, which is good, considering how many people spill various kinds of beverages on it. The rug on the floor is 100% genuine Olefin, for the same reason. No need to cover either one. Both are already environmentally disastrous plastic and perfect for the job. Upstairs, we don't cover anything. That's goofy little old lady stuff my grandmother did. She had covers made of some kind of plastic that had little flower patterns embossed into it. That was both uncomfortable and weird looking in a bad way. I have hated clear plastic ever since.

As for my couch? No, no plastic. It's covered in worn out cloth upholstery (the replacement of which, is a project for this year); Doritos, Twinkie, and cookie crumbs; motorcycle and gun magazines; several remote controls; and DVDs that I haven't finished watching yet...

I tie foam ants for bluegill i throw with a 4wt fly rod. Depending on their mood i want the ant to slowly take on water and list to one side before sliding under, or ride high on the surface. Whenever i tie a batch i spray half with scotch guard so they won’t take on any water and stay high on the surface. It keeps them from taking on water but leaves the rubber legs lively.
