So today I was surfing eBay and ran across something that sparked my interest. After checking my funds and realizing I didnt have the cash, I bought it away.

It's a Schecter Baron H. I love basses that make a statement and that stand out asthetically. Not to mention that its a tele style body which I LOVE!

Since this bass is equipped with a single 'Duncan Designed' MM pup config I'm thinking that it may be somewhat limited tonally. Could anyone recommend a nice, versatile MM style pickup? I'm a hard rock player so I like some bite to my tone, but I like to sit in on acoustic gigs whenever I can. Oh, btw here are some pics:

Nice bass man, really classy. Check out an Aero MM replacement http://www.aeroinstrument.com/pickups.html look at the bottom of the page. I have a set of the type1 J pups and they are amazing.

Thanks guys....I'm stoked to get it and try it out. I dont know much about these pickups, so I'm gonna do some reasearch. But for the price I snagged this one at, I can afford to splurge a bit.

If you end up getting rid of that pickup... I kinda want it. I am going to be modding a P-Bass to have a MM in the sweet spot...

Our local shop has had one for probably over a year now. I haven't touched it since they first got it, but I found the slab style body uncomfortable, and the pickup was way too close to the bridge. The electronics are actually fairly versatile... I'll give it a go next time I go in for some strings.

I happen to love Duncan MM pickups. Judging by the number of knobs, it appears you also have a 3-band active EQ.

Duncan makes 2 MM pickups, an alnico and a ceramic. The alnico is warmer, the ceramic is brighter. I assume your bass has the ceramic since it is a hollow body and should be plenty warm sounding as-is.

If it were my bass, I would keep the Duncan. But since it's yours, I can only recommend you play it through the full range of EQ settings before you decide to junk the pickup. Make sure you have a new 9v battery in it, too.

If you absolutely hate the pickup and need to replace it, I suppose you should check out Bergantino, Aero, Nordstrand, Curtis Novak and EMG.

If I needed another Duncan MM (which I don't, all my basses already have them!) I would offer to buy it from you...

Hmm - the picture looks like it has the Basslines logo on the pickup cover. Of course all my previous comments apply to a real Duncan Basslines pickup. I can't say I've ever run across a "Duncan designed" pickup that was manufactured by someone else.

Is that what it has?

See the "D" in the first pic? There is also no box around the logo.

You can try a Carey Nordstrand (Sp?) He makes great pickups. Outstanding sound. Check this out.

An MM style humbucker seems to be an odd match with a hollowbody, but personally, I like Duncans. I'd try it out for a while before worrying about swapping it.

I've had Duncan Designed pickups before and they're 'ok' but not much more. Kinda sterile and not really any character to them. I havent even gotten it yet, and I will definately test out the stock pup (I mean it's cheaper that way )! I'm just looking for alternatives in case I am not satisfied with the DD. And thanks for all the comments.....its making me impatient!!

If you want real versatility in that thing, check out the Hybrid from Delano. It looks pretty interesting, indeed....
