It looks like poor Carol Kaye doesn't understand the internet

i can't believe i read all 21 pages. great bassist, but clearly a touch off her rocker. in her defense however, how many 75 yr olds understand what a bit torrent is? i'd assume not many.
just because someone isn't particularly likable doesn't mean they can't be a brilliant artist.

Since all 21 pages that folks are talking about seem to suggest Ms. Kaye is off her rocker, let me ask a dumb question.
If her copyrighted material is distributed for free without her consent. Doesn't she have a claim? Copyrighting your material with the Library of Congress is doing one's due diligence...
Doesn't she have a right to seek compensation from those distributing her material without her expressed consent? Doesn't anyone have a right to own their creation in this internet world...?

That she may be doing to a degree...
But if a pawn shop purchases or accepts stolen goods and distributes or sells the goods is it liable on some level as well as the original thief?
I'm asking because I really don't know...

Um, I wouldn't say that. Everything is relative, and the days of the session bassist are not what they used to be. You are looking at a bassist who sat in on 10,000 sessions, playing on some of the most celebrated recordings of all time.
Sam Cooke, Phil Spector, the Beach Boys, (hell, Pet Sounds?? Come on..) TV Themes, Quincy Jones, Zappa, Ray Charles, Glen Campbell..
Overrated? No. Odd and quirky? Yes. Remember, she was a lady in a men's dominated world of music. She's used to battling - and having an edge.
i've said that myself.....i've been around long enough to recall the kind of ride that women got as they entered traditional male dominated fields.....it's quite interesting how quickly some are prone to pillory carole kaye for stuff that would probably get a guy a pass
Following your analogy, it is like she attacked a local newspaper for reporting a story about the pawn shop that was accepting stolen goods.
Then she lashes out at the newspaper delivery boy for trying to explain that the newspaper isn't responsible for selling stolen goods.
And then she sues the Yellow Pages for carrying an advertisement for the pawn shop.
The newspaper = TorrentFreak (which is a blog, not a bit torrent index)
The newspaper boy = Quite a few people who tried to contact her and explain to her why she was attacking the wrong target (e.q. Gawd)
Yellow Pages = Google (she has filed a complaint against Google for showing search results that might link to sites that might include links to her copyrighted material.)
There are millions and millions of theives ... there is no way to catch them all.

Depending on where they are, they may not even be thieves - remember... IP law isn't the same in every country.
Go to torrentz.com. Search "Carol Kaye", and it will provide a list of files. click one of the files, and it will go to a list of sites that people have uploaded her material on (torrentz.com is basically a search engine for torrents). As well, there are some rapidshare users who have uploaded her stuff.
The sites themselves aren't directly responsible, they don't upload the material. It's the user who uploaded the file, and anyone who has downloaded and than shares the material (seeding) that is responsible. But depending on where you are, and if you are using certain proxy programs, etc, those responsible may not be doing anything illegal. There are a lot of loopholes that copyright laws have not caught up to.
I think you're completely misunderstanding what happened here. Carl Kaye found out that some of her material was being shared via various bit torrent sights.
She then threatened TorrentFreak, which is a just a blog. This would be analogous to me threatening the local paper for reporting that my car was stolen.
Carol Kaye has some legitimate legal claims with some folks who are pirating her stuff, but NOT with the folks she's been harassing who are entirely unrelated to this.
I've grasped that so far, but it's really sad and frustrating that the international laws are so weak...
And frankly, IP laws are weak here too...
