It's a mystery - or not

When I was around 12-14 or so, we played some slightly older tunes but primarily newer stuff so the girls our age liked us. Around sixteen or so we played much older and a few newer songs. The pay was way better, and the ladies were dancing their brains out and more available for chit chat and such.

My seventeen year old grandson likes and plays some Led Zeppelin. I cannot fault him for that.

What really bothers me is the more recent songs, the 2000s songs aren't getting cool appeal, and there are goods songs in that decade. Its always 70's and 80's, barely 90's sometimes. It started to saturate already. And then what? It will became a niche, like the classical music.

Yes! The other day I heard 90s Metallica on the classic rock station. That's not classic rock! Lol, but I agree with you, there's great music happening all the time. 90s nostalgia is hitting hard now... give it a few years and 00s nostalgia will hit hard and more folks will play those songs.

A mature human being doesn't engage in any of the "-ism's." At the same time, our culture has too many examples of such misguided behavior, across whole swaths of human interaction. Conducting oneself with grace can often feel like fighting insurmountable headwinds.

A musician should strive to work with the most talented projects that can be enjoined. Succeeding with auditions and working with the very best players is a central goal for many. Age, as one "-ism," really should not enter into the picture. When it does, better to seek other outlets, and not waste time on behaviors we can not control.

As to performance material, a central, but not identified rising challenge is that we have deviated so significantly from a Top 40 stage for new musical content, that both audiences and players are left with somewhat of a vacuum for newer material at the popular level. That challenge faces all musicians, because our craft generally needs audiences. Those audiences currently have no widely accepted reference for newer musical content. The post Top 40 era is difficult. We shouldn't make it more so by venting frustrations at any of the "-ism's."

I've been playing music far older than me for my whole life. I was born in 1985 but still jammed on Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc. Now i play jazz from the 50's and 60's. Sorry but this rant is weak af.

It is cool to finally be the target of nostalgia bait after decades of Boomers going out of their way to publicly shame us for things like receiving participation trophies (that they themselves were giving us, lol). I sure wish the U.S. taxpayer (or anyone really) would give me $10,000, $20,000, or the amount I actually paid in student loans plus interest (which would be a whole lot more). Because I too faced a ten-year, >$10K repayment plan when I got out of school. But I signed the papers, I was an adult, made that choice of my own free will, no one had forced me. So I didn't whine about it (maybe griped a little) and paid it back. That's $10,000 worth of ageism right there.

So you're mad that some people are trying to start a band with someone in their own age group?

Or is that you think people should only be allowed to play music that was popular when they were teenagers?

I don't think the OP is a troll. He's a supporting member and been a member of TB since 2013. I think he's just frustrated he's being excluded due to age, and I get that. I don't agree with the logic of his rant, but I can see his position.

This. Like I said, he's mad at being excluded, maybe because he'd like to play that music.

But I would not really want to be in a band with a bunch of 20-30 somethings. I think being 64 in a group of very young players would feel massively weird. If I want to be an outsider, there are lots of ways to do it without mucking up my musical fun.
