When you say there is a "stepdown in output", do you mean that as a function of overall volume?

DIs have two functions:

1. Convert high impedance output of instrument to balanced low impedance for connection to a mixer

2. Reduce instrument level to be closer to mike level, which in most boxes will be a 10 to 20 dB gain reduction.

Not that I am recommending sims in this case. But one thing I do like about sims is you can play around and experiment with mic positioning and mics and even speakers and see what effect it may have on the sound in a virtual environment before you begin your journey.

Thanks for that tidbit of advice! Upon your suggestion, I have borrowed a sim station very much like the CAB room in your link and it has helped tremendously over the holidays in helping configure the dedicated studio set-up in my home. I would've never thought of that approach myself. Thanks!
