Don't let all the gear talk make up your mind for you. If everyone here was really honest, they would agree that for most gigs, they have gear that goes above and beyond what they really NEED. Most of your audience doesn't give a rip about what gear you use, as long as you are playing a nice line they can groove to.
And that's fine. Not everyone has the same gigs, needs or available financing.
I have a different take home message from all of this, which is that "expensive" and "good" are not the same thing. Even less closely related are "expensive" and "what you like".
Its not that I "don't need a better bass", its that my Hamer or '62RI would yield a great sound on any gig or session I could imagine, at any level. It would always be my playing that would make or break the date ... the basses are that good.
