I've never seen Jaco play this bass before

Most definitely a Jaydee bass. Mark King used to play them as well.

I've never tried to argue that Jaco was the best bass player ever, but I will always say that he was greatest of all time. I miss you, Jaco!

Ok. Jaco had a mental illness, and it took him down. I've seen it up close and personal in my family, and it's not something you wish upon anyone. Let's understand that Jaco's behavior reflected his illness, and it's documented in some of these videos. Next subject, and one that I return to time and again:

Jaco was an amazing musician.

Watch him groove out the end of Teen Town here with Birelli Lagrene in March of '86. Jaco grooved like a mutha you know what.

Just to add to what you wrote, and I don't mean to derail the thread, but everyone should read this. Such a touching article from his daughter Mary Pastorius. I have mental illness in my family and I have suffer from depression and anxiety, nothing compared to what Jaco went thru but still sucks. Music is my escape. Here is the article:

About the black bass: Jaco played anything in the last years of his life... He played Precisions, Guilds, all kinds of Jazz Basses (fretted and fretless)...

Indeed - Jaco played everything he could get.
Reason: in his last years of drug abuse he used to travel without anything but his clothes on his body.

In 1986 he recorded a solo record in germany, and used an old Framus Jazz Bass Copy, because his Fender Jazz Bass was in the US.
That original Framus Bass is now in the Framus museum in Markneukirchen/Germany, where I played it last year.
It's the bass you see in one of the photos you posted.

Jaco proved the point to every GAS infected person on TB: it's not the bass, it's the bass player. I've heard him play a whole bunch of basses and the guy simply sounded like himself, irrelevant of whether he was on a Fender Jazz, a reissue or something totally different.

It's something to think about when we want sell our current bass in order to buy a new one which will give us "the sound". The money would be better spent on lessons or even milkshakes.

While I don't consider myself a Treke, I love the shows and movies!!! Great way to bond!


Yup seems that no matter what he was going thru he loved his family and was a good father. I have gone thru some of those feelings and emotions she talked about in the article. Feeling of total loss and loneliness for no reason what's so ever. Thinking about death all the time. That's when I finally listened to my friends and family and went and seeked help, I was scared at one point what I might do. Now I love life and enjoy it!!! I am glad I asked for help, I whish Jaco had friends around him that would've done what my family and friends did. I mean I am sure some of them tried but if you are on the road all the time you may not be around the good people. Maybe he would still be here today?

Well, I only tried that bass without amplifier.
I played the "Birdland" licks of course - but it sounded like an ordinary Jazz Bass, not really like Jaco.
It's a very accurate copy of a Fender, but I could not hear any special sound or vibes - a lot of new Jazz Basses (even non expensive copies) sound better to me than that old Framus Bass.

As another forum member said: it's in the fingers - not in the bass.

But I felt special to play an instrument the master played....
