J bass recommendation

What if you wanted a jbass (i want one) but wanted to get something other than a fender (i'd like to try something else) would you go Lakland or G&L? or another builder?
Maybe you have about $1500 (saving is awesome) and used is acceptable.

Go for a Sandberg TT model. Or the TM which offers a humbucker with optional single coil in place of the bridge J pickup. You may be able to find something in your price range. Their necks are to die for!

Finally found the right one.

My vote would be for G&L . I got a JB Tribute that just blows me away . The US made ones could only be better . Best Jazz I have ever played and that includes Fenders , Laklands and the Sire I have now .

G&L is a great option. All the brands above are great. Depends on your personal criteria.

G&L or Lakland would be good choices. I prefer a Lakland myself.

My vote would be Lakland. I once tried a pj in black with red tort, bound and blocked neck and super light. And of course the neck was amazing. It will always be the one that got away. Even my Lakland skyline is superb but if you can find an American Jazz within your budget you’ll never look back.

My first choice would be a used Lakland DJ with aero pickups. Other memorable option: Carvin SB.

I'm with the G&L guys. Incredible instruments. Sire has a good reputation but I've never played one. If you aren't scared of weight my choice would be a pre-1999 Warwick with a wenge neck. They made several models that are essentially a J bass, namely the Corvette line. Otherwise build a Warmoth bass and opt for the carbon neck rods.

Kiesel's JB series are awesome. You can go plain jane or go with outrageous finishes and boutique woods. I just got what they had on the floor because I am cheap. The only upgrade I did was tamarind wood knobs and they charged me like 8 bucks.

While there are many experts on Talkbass giving you excellent information about bass guitar brands, I sincerely wish someone had advised me about resale value. While I never thought I would ever get rid of my bass, well things have changed and now I'm considering selling equipment. In my area (deep south) Fender guitars are the most popular and are the easiest to sell or trade.

Momose is a Japanese builder...super hi quality stuff...I’ve seen them in your price range but with the majority at Japanese music stores. You can find them on Reverb usually.
