J bass users... How do you set your tone controls?

I no longer own a jazz bass but played them for years in Rock, R&B, Funk, Jazz Standards, etc.
90% of the time I would just have all three controls wide open.
10% of the time I would roll off the neck pickup just enough to get it to "burp" a little.

More often I use right hand placement and picking dynamics to vary the tones.
Oh,Round wound strings BTW.

one reason i use a jazz is because of the simplicity of the controls on the bass itself. there is no overlap with the amp. i set the amp so if i roll the neck pickup off, i get a really midrangy sort of geddy/wal sound. if i max everything out on the bass, then it is more of the fender sound.

95% of the time all controls open. I pick more aggressively towards the neck if I want more bite.

5% of the time I cut a 20% off the volume to get a bit more midrange. I play rock/hard rock and the bass fits fantastic in that context.

I roll my passive tone control off around 10-15% usually. I allso will roll off my neck pickup around 10%, and I'll add a touch of bass boost depending on the situation.

I am play urban gospel, jazz, and modern R&B, and I have a Celinder J-Update.

I have two MIA Fender Jazz basses, four and five string, which are alder/maple. The four has noiseless Lindy Fralin Split-Jazz pickups, and the five has stock Fender single coils. I play original rock in the classic/indie genres.

With the four, I usually run neck pickup 100%, and roll off the bridge pickup about a third. If that's too boomy, I'll run both pickups up full. I never favor the bridge pickup. I usually roll the treble off about a third, but I'll turn it up if I want maximum pickstyle grind.

On the five, I'll similarly favor the neck pickup if I'm not getting much hum; otherwise I'll run both pickups 100%. I roll off the treble slightly more on the five, which is very bright with the pure single coils and rounds.
