J/MM/J configuration

Does anyone uses a pickup configuration like this? (see attached pic)

I have it on my bass, but the eletronics were poorly made and I can't get the MM working with the any of the J's.

I'm thinking of maybe adding a blend pot...

Does any one have experience/ideas for this situation?

Either that, or take a leaf out of G&L's book and use small toggle switches. I have an L-2000 and have done a mod on it by adding one more switch. The addition of the extra switch gives me the following:

Series Neck
Series Both
Series Bridge

Parallel Neck
Parallel Both
Parallel Bridge

Outside coil Neck
Outside coil Both
Outside coil Bridge
(The outside coils make the L-2000 sound like a Jazz)

Inside coil Neck
Inside coil Both
Inside coil Bridge
(I think the inside coils sound a bit Rickish)

All this without messing about with the tone or having to use stacked volume controls. There's just the standard (for a G&L) Volume, Bass and Treble knobs.

I dare say you could probably do something similar to get what you want from your bass.

When you say you can't get it working do you mean that only the MM pickup works OR the Js work (i.e.: generate sound) at any given time? Or do you mean that they just don't sound good together? The trick you have to deal with here is that most bass electronics assume that you'll have at most a two pickup configuration, there are not many three pickup basses.

I can only get one or the other working. I wanted some MM+J sound, not all the three (the sound would problably get too fat), but as soon as I turn any of the J on, the MM stops working. Someone told me it might be something to do with the phase.

There's no pre-amp circuit in this bass, but the J pickups are active. (The knobs are currentlyu three volume - one for each pickup - and a tone).
The first thing I was going to do before messing up with the pots is replacing the pickups for all passive and redo the wiring.

Maybe, with a switch, I could throw in a nice pre-amp...
The bass itself is nice although the pickups aren't that good (korean kent armstrong).

I bassically would like to keep the J/MM/J configuration, but redo the eletronics to get a more versatile instrument.
