"J" pickups discussion and comparisons.

I just want someone to give me a little advise. I have an Ibanez SR505 I bought new in 1995, and have been playing it all these years in churches with no problems. It has EMG Select active J type pickups. Before that I played a 1974 Pearl EB3 copy that is no longer worth the trouble. I had a Fender Jazz from the 60s before that, but the neck was always wobbly. I always just brought my own amp to the smaller churches and it worked fine. My wife and I are now at a much bigger church where I have to plug into the sound system. The sound guys complained about the Ibanez making noise in the system, even though I don't hear it from my amp. It makes the noise either direct or through my amp so it isn't the amp. So I switched and bought an Epiphone Jack Casidy that they and I are both happy with. I just miss that low B string and wonder about trading pickups to something quieter for the Ibanez. Will the Fender 5 string noiseless samarium cobalt J pickups work on my Ibanez? Is there a better choice for my Ibanez? WIll I have to replace the potentiometers?

Might be the preamp making the noise. You don't have the treble boosted do you?

I wonder this to, 'cause at Monday I will get my bass returned from the local guitar-store, with the STK-J2 as the bridge pickup. :)

EDIT: It's a P/J bass, getting the (already mentioned)STK-J2 in the bridge combined with the SPB-2.

I've got Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in my Warmoth Jazz bass and they kick ass. I have only tried a couple of the other pickups listed here, but the QP's are definatly my favorite. I can play them side by side with my active EMG J's and I can tell you the QP's blow them away. It's not quite a fair comparison because of the 10 db pad for active over passive, but the QP's are hotter on their respective settings than the EMG's. Soooo mucher fatter and much more clear than the EMG's.

excellent excellent sound. Very traditional and fendery, very balanced, smooth yet articulate top. Fat lows and mids. Great pickup choice and definitely my #1 pick over duncan antiquities and aeros. Looking forward to trying the nordies though.

hey guys!

i just replaced my stock HC from my Sadowsky MS5 to Sadowsky singles. i really love the tone but i feel like the slaptone is a bit compressed. or maybe i'm just missing the ultra bright of the HC a bit. does the singles suppose to have higher output than the HC, i think my HC has more output, is there something wrong with my singles?


so i got few more questions:

1. are the 2 pickup's are the same, i mean neck and bridge, do they sound the same?
2. what will be the result if the tech accidentally put the neck pickup to the bridge and vice versa?
3. what is series and parallel pick up settings?
4. what is 250k and 500k pot? is it the volume control knob? does it affect the tone and output of the preamp?
5. what do you think about the marcus j-retro preamp? is it good? is it compatible with the Sadowsky singles?

sorry for so many questions, but thanks to all anyway!

i have a US fender jass bass V, all stock.
i'm having a problem with my low B string. any note i play on it doesn't come out too clearly and i hear more of the overtones than the actual note. even when i try to patch it thru an eq. so i figure it might be a pickup issue.

is there anything i can do to improve on the clarity?

I read all 15 pgs of this and although really interesting, I didn't see my exact guitar/recommendation. I've got a MIA '07 passive Jazz w/S1. I play straight ahead rock (60s-today) through Ampeg B2RE/SVT-410 HLF. The Dimarzio Model J's got a lot of praise - would those be a good fit?

I will be looking for a set of single coil pickups to install in a bass quite a bit like a Warwick Thumb.

I loved the DiMarzio Model J's in my old fender and I have since sold it.

I am curious about pole positions with angled pickups.

I'm gonna need a pickup with similar dimensions to the MEC J pickups.

Anybody make 'em?

I have a ltd with active emg hz pickups and I am not impressed at all I must say, Dont know if its just these specific pickups that I think sounds bad, have no other emg's to compare with.
It may be the picups I dont like or simply that the bass sucks(Ltd F-254)

I'm looking into getting those Nordstrands. Why is the regular model better than the hum-cancelling one?

I'm not sure how well a vintage bass sounds, but I mostly play rock. Will such pickups make my modern Jazz Bass sound good for that setting? Why not go for the hum-cancelling model?
