J-Retro deluxe route control cavity

I'm using a CS Jazz and the control cavity I think is a tad small for the j retro. For some reason when I turn the passive tone knob down all the way it starts acting like a volume and cuts the bass off but when I take the plate out and do that the volume didn't drop. Do I need to remove a little wood to make it fit better?

Any ideas?

It's not an unusual thing to have to do. Measure how deep the cavity is and measure how deep the pre goes under the the plate. If the pre is touching the caivty it's earthing itself, which isn't good.
