Theretheyare, I just recently started playing my Jackbass after having it repaired, and these are my thoughts:
I've had my Jackbass since early 2001, and have had a few different sets of strings on it.
The strings that the bass shipped with were garbage in my opinion. Twangy tone, and they were turning my fingers black after playing them for about 10 minutes. I tried the Blue Steels, as Jack suggests, and really liked them.
I then tried Rotosound 77 flatwounds, and loved them; different, more acoustic-sounding, but sounded great.
Then, I tried the James Jamerson set, and I thought they were going to pull the bridge off. The tension felt that high to me, so I took them off after three days.
Now, I have D'Addario XL 100s on, and like them best. The bass has a clear, ringing tone it didn't have with any other string. Less acoustic-sounding, but the clarity especially in the upper notes is so pure.
As for the bridge, I always thought that the 3 point bridge, hovering over the body is what gives the Jackbass its different tone. Quicker decay than a heavier bridge that comes fully in contact with the body.
Last year, I bought a Fender T-Bucket bass and immediately loved the fast decay like an acoustic guitar, which is essentially what it is: An acoustic bass guitar.
As for the tuning machines, I never though of changing them, but will give it a thought.
Enjoy your bass. I also feel that leaving the varitone switch on 50 yields the best sound.
