Johnny Winter at The Capitol Theater was the loudest show I ever saw. Edgar Winter was opening act....I think my ears are still ringing, 30 plus years later....

I collected every picture you ever sent me Fred. Hope that doesn't make me obssessed!
Jack and his bassline in Crown of Creation is the singlemost influence on me becoming a bass player. I still remember the first time I heard that song and the hair on the back of my neck stood up.
Of course the political statement was powerful, too. But Jack's bassline made you FEEL the power and emotion in it.
Then of course, I saw Grace Slick doing a talk show years later, and when asked how awesome it must have been, being there in that era and singing those incredibly powerful songs and I nearly cried when she said (and I paraphrase) "Actually, I was so high most of the time that I really didn't even think about what it was I was singing."
Airplane was just incredible though. Still one of my favorite bands of all time.
You know, watching that clip from the Ed Sullivan show, it was really quite remarkable that they let Airplane do a song so powerfully advocating nothing short of anarchy and revolution.
Of course, Tricky Dick hadn't managed to get himself elected (at the expense of the lives of countless American soldiers:scowl: ) quite yet. Had he been in office already at that time, they may very well have been doing "Today" instead.

I'm back. The class was great. The whole weekend was great except that it was freezing cold the whole time!! I'm still absorbing all of it and can't believe I actually was there. Jack is one cool guy and Jorma is more fun to be around than a circus. I could have flown home without an airplane (there's a pun in here somewhere). We also got to see Hot Tuna do a short acoustic set over the weekend, I was in heaven.
Oh my God!!!!!!!!! Where is this from?!!!!!! This totally changes my approach to bass playing!!!!! Is there a CD version of this concert?!!!!

I believe this is from a DVD of the Airplane live. I think that it has not been released yet and is hung up somewhere. Called "A night at the family dog" and has other artists too. It's listed as not available by Amazon.

Jack's "Family Dog" solo is also on the 'Fly Jefferson Airplane' DVD thais available. I was recently watching a old VHS movie on the closing of the Fillmore West and there was some great soloing by Jack in the Hot Tuna portion of the show, I'm not sure if that made it to DVD yet.
That was one of my favorite records when I first started playing Bass. I love the album cover where it credits Jack for playing Bass and Eyebrows. Anyone who saw him live would testify that not only did he play incredible bass and get awesome tone, but bhind those Hippy Granny Glasses he would move those eye brows to his playing and what ever he was diggin into.
One more cool Jack Track was my favorite of all time. The Classic version of VOODOO CHILD by Jimi Hendrix on Electric Ladyland with Steve Winwood on Hammond Organ, Jack laying down a Badd Assed Blues groove and Jimi at his very best. I get goose bumps thinking about it.
Check out the movie, LORDS OF DOGTOWN. The opening scene has that song in the background and imediately made that movie one of my favorites. (great story too).

Jack gets credit for bass and eyebrow on "Burgers" by Hot Tuna, one of the great records of all time. I have seen Hot Tuna play live dozens of times over the years.....they're always great.
If y'all want to hear about my bass class with him last month, let me know. We all did tease him about the "eyebrow", btw...

I've always dug Jack (i started playing in '67-'68)."Bless It's Pointed Little Head"....yup, I love his intro to "3/5ths of a mile in 10 seconds"!
