Once upon a time a long, long time ago in a town called Washington, DC I witnessed Mr. C playing bass for a band called James Brown and The Famous Flames. A few months later, Mr. C joined up with The Jefferson Airplane and the rest is history!

Oddly enough, that Marjorie Thompson that is Jorma's
teaching assistant was married briefly to one of my
ex drummers back in the mid 70's. She was a finger picking
whiz even back then. She developed major G.A.S. after taking
some courses there and now owns about 15 different
acoustic guitars. (Go figure!) She has found one guy
that does all her setups, and is touring regularly on the
folk circuit, including a few European dates. After a few
sessions there, Jorma asked her to teach there.

Between being a Professor of Biology at Brown University,
a Dean of the University, teaching with Jorma, touring
and a family of 6 kids, I honestly don't know how she gets
it done, but she makes it look easy. And she is a VERY
talented guitarist.

FYI, FPR is full through the 2007 season, and they won't open
enrollmment ubntil Sept 2007, I know, I asked and got
the email back from Vanessa Kaukonen, Jorma's wife.

It does sound like the teaching programs are growing there.

The article mentions Happy Traum and Homespun tapes. That
is an excellent resource, though they need more bass DVD's.

I picked up a fingerstyle DVD from Homespun by Peter
Huttlinger, a National Fingerpicking champion and Nashville
sideman. Great DVD, as he does a tremenduous amount of
work with the right hand and exercises for the right hand. His
comment was that they were things you really had to do
every day, no matter what level you were at.

As a bassist, I found a lot of useful material I could move
over to the bass that worked.

But Marjorie told me privately that Jack was much more
demanding than Jorma as far as his teaching style. Which
would be fine with me.

next year may be the year I go. One of my guitar players wants to go as well.

The Oteil Burbridge class still has vacacies in the end of the
year.

IF you look at the schedule for this year, there are still some open classes. Not all of them are full. I think it was either 1000 or 1200 for the weekend which includes accommodations and meals. You can stay in local motel and of course you have to get yourself and your gear there and back.

Mark Egan's Level 2-3 class is available. Oteil's Level 3 class
is available.

Jack's level 3's are full. He only has one open class in late
November, Level 4, Bass Performance and detailing. I had
read on the site they encourage a lower level class for
first timers.

Level 4 - Proficient/Advanced: Performance Detailing and Improvisation

This class presumes considerable familiarity with repertoire, and also
facility with fingerstyle playing. It is expected that participants have
knowledge of chord inversions and variations up the neck along with
solid right hand technique. Exercises and songs are aimed at experienced
players seeking challenge via in- depth techniques such as interpretations,
arranging, developing solos, improvising, and playing together. The focus
is on bringing pieces to performance level in terms of groove, tone, texture
and creativity.

In order to be considered for a Level 4 class, it is required that there has
been previous experience with the same instructor in a level 3 class.
In unusual cases, a student may request a review by submitting a
recording (CD or mp3) of at least 3 pieces demonstrative of skill;
interview may be requested also.

did he use flats with airplane??? Love his tone in that era

I don't recall him ever saying he used flats on the Guild Starfire II. But the combo of really big rigs, the Alembic mods and the iirc Hagstrom pups (like the Darkstar ones reproduced by Fred Hammon of Hammon Engineering) made for a big, big sound.

A couple of Jack's student's have reported he doesn't play that way anymore and tells you to stop if you try to go there in his Fur Peace Ranch classes. His video really focuses more on tonal differences between strings. and detailing your bass lines. That doesn't take away anything from him as a bassist though.
