Looks like a Pau Ferro fretless. Good stuff. Saw him and Meg play Portland, OR in 2005 promoting their Get Behind Me, Satan album.

Oh, I'm okay with artists changing their look... but most important ingredient of the cake (i.e., good music) has to be there. Otherwise, we're sitting at the table being served icing and sprinkles... and that's been the case for "popular music" for the better part of the last 10-15 years.

I've got to say I disagree about levelling this criticism at Jack White. A bunch of his acts do have somewhat schtick-y visual brands, but I think that most anyone who is into american blues rock would appreciate what he does musically. I think his record label / studio / pressing plant business is a pretty cool move as well:

That's not saying a whole lot.

I just learned that Stuart Daniel Baker AKA Unkown Hinson the voice of Early Cuyler, "an impoverished anthropomorphic hillbilly mud squid living in the Georgia region of the Blue Ridge Mountains" was also involved in some controversy and got ousted from his role for good reason. So yeah. That's not saying a whole lot at all!
