Jack wiring

Apologies for the dumb question but how do you tell what wire goes where on a Jack socket? Which is shield and which is ring?

It's the tip and sleeve in a mono plug.

Follow the connections. The bit that sticks up, that would be in contact with the tip of the jack, should be connected to the hot/signal.

If you need a stereo jack, the ring is the connection between the tip and sleeve.

Cheers! I still don't get it though. I can work out the tip connection but I'm being really dense trying to wire input and outputs on a ruby headphone amp I've built (probably doesn't help doing it with a hangover too).

They are mono sockets with three pins and the input socket has connections to shield, Jack tip and ring. And I can't differentiate!

I really don't know Jack on this so any advice would be great!

If they are mono then the shield/sleeve and ring are probably already connected (if not, it doesn't matter as they would be connected by the jack plug itself anyway.

You just have to try and follow where the metal goes.

You could always use a multimeter to see what connects to what if you want peace of mind.

The case is the common. The tip and the ring are the L & R. ( or L & R).

If it is like the pic above (left), look at it from the side and you can see which pin goes to which contact
