Jackson Minion (metal tone on a budget)

So I have a year coming up at my ***** retail job, and although it is a ***** retail job, it does have the added advantage of either one paid week or, as I've selected, an extra paycheck instead of that paid week. (AWWW YEHHH!!)

I have a Squier Jaguar that I've been enjoying, but since getting back into the local rock scene, I've realized that getting a budget bass geared towards heavier sounds would be beneficial. I've always been a bit of a Jackson nerd, and the Minion is certainly caught my eye while I was researching the Jaguar.

If I pick up the Minion, get it to a local Tech who did a great job on my Jaguar, get it set up and then slap some slightly heavier gauge strings on it, should I be able to downtune it to say, D standard? Maybe D flat standard?

Does anyone have experience using the Minion as I've described? Thank you
