If you've ever had a friend or family member suffering from mental illness then you know how hard it is to help them , no matter how hard you try. I wouldn't assume that no one tried to help him but the reality is there is very little any one can do.

...I knew Jaco when I lived in NYC... he was BS crazy by then... sleeping in a park in the Village or a basketball court... his equipment was pawned or out in the weather when he slept on the ground. I didn't know how to help... I was kind of scared of him...

I remember him too. Standing in front of Free Being Records, filthy, no shoes, trying to shove Weather Report albums into people's hands while screaming "This is real music!".
He was not approachable at this point.
I couldn't even recognize him until someone said "That's Jaco".

It makes me think about how close the rest of us are to just being discarded once we are unwell.

I sincerely hope you never find out. It's devastating!

Guild was the original distributor for Hartke, and it was apparently Jaco who introduced Hartke to Guild.

My step brother died of severe alcoholism and the mental illness that comes with that. Every one in the family helped him. Old high school friends helped him. But in the end he chose to be homeless and died behind the home town library surrounded by empty booze containers.

Jaco's mental health issues were significant, and the difficulties / inabilities to get effective remediation were tragic.

Still, for the period in which he was "healthy," or at least productive, he produced a body of compositional and performance work, which is pretty much without equal in the bass world. Puts into some perspective some of what was lost.

One other perspective that hit home for me was listening through the various bass performances in the recording "Word of Mouth Revisited." Basically many of the top bass players covering Jaco's work. All amazing performances; except that the only one to really come close to Jaco's overall vibe was Victor Bailey. Marcus Miller didn't even try, opting instead to record an awesome memorial. It's a really cool set of performances, and includes an over dub of Jaco's actual Wiggle Waggle part with an updated band recording. Very cool all the way around.

Didn't know that album existed. Checking it out now. Opus Pocus was always of my favourite tracks, David does a great job. I see what you mean about Victor Bailey.

I have that CD as well. I never cared for weather report, too synthy for my taste. The big band style recordings are much nicer for me personally.

I don't know (and did not realize that was common knowledge), but given your response, I assume it was after Jaco's death. I guess I'll go look it up.
