Jaco's mental health issues were significant, and the difficulties / inabilities to get effective remediation were tragic.
Still, for the period in which he was "healthy," or at least productive, he produced a body of compositional and performance work, which is pretty much without equal in the bass world. Puts into some perspective some of what was lost.
One other perspective that hit home for me was listening through the various bass performances in the recording "Word of Mouth Revisited." Basically many of the top bass players covering Jaco's work. All amazing performances; except that the only one to really come close to Jaco's overall vibe was Victor Bailey. Marcus Miller didn't even try, opting instead to record an awesome memorial. It's a really cool set of performances, and includes an over dub of Jaco's actual Wiggle Waggle part with an updated band recording. Very cool all the way around.
