Jaco overdrive tone?

I have recently fallen in love with Jaco's overdriven sound in this - - video. (It's not a great quality recording, if you have Weather Report's album 8:30 it's the drive in both Teen Town and Slang)

It's just what I'm looking for, powerful and huge sounding, but not piercing, it still retains a certain amount of warmth.

I'm pretty sure he just used some sort of overdrive function in his amplifier, so I'm not looking for exactly what he used.

Something that can give me that powerful, but warm tone. I have a bigg muff and it doesn't satisfy for this.

I'm looking for something in the £100 ($200) region.

sounds tube, as youre in the uk we have to pay about 8 times more then the US, so youll be looking at 120+ i reckon

the EBS multidrive or EBS valvedrive would nail it

something like the boss odb3 and all those "overdrive" (distortion) pedals are shocking.

im pretty sure he also uses a chorus pedal for that sound, so the chorus would definetly help. chorus + slight tube overdrive + bridge pickup turned right up = jaco tone

Well, if I remember correctly Jaco used the fuzz on his Acoustic 360 head. I've seen some DIY stuff with Acoustic 360 preamps/fuzzes, but if you don't want to go that route, I know the bassist in Pearl Jam used a Fulltone Fuzz pedal to get what he described as an acoustic 360 fuzz tone... so you might want to look at anything based on the Fuzz Face I think would be an ok bet. I actually got a sound very similar to that with my BJFE Blueberry set to a "light" setting. I only just discovered that tone from it, as up 'til now I had been using the Blueberry only for super-thick doomy grind; it didn't even occur to me to see if it could get a light fuzzy breakup like that until a day or so ago! Man it sure can.

In the intro of Slang there is a tremolo-ish or even reverb-ish effect on his tone. I been trying to find a chorus pedal that nails that as it probably is also produced from the hall (ambience) that he is playing in, but the recording brings it out amazingly. Not asking what effect he used but rather what single modern stompbox can come closest to reproducing that effect live.:confused:

Yep, that's what it is. I had an Acoustic 360 back in the day - always thought that distortion sound was the worst. Funny, I've seen several young guys playing those recently, and not Jaco imitators either. Anyone know what's driving this recent trend? Retro-flavor of the month?
