I have to agree with you there, not because there is some stigma about listening to Joni Mitchell, but because no matter how many times I've tried to listen to those albums, I just can't seem to dig her stuff. At all. She really drives me up a wall after about half a song. Steely Dan is the same for me, so maybe I just don't like jazz and rock (pop, folk, whatever) mixed like that. I love all those styles (and all of the players she had in that band), but Joni Mitchell just doesn't make sense to me. To each their own though.
The simple answer: just dive in and have a great experience. I find his debut solo album to be a bit tiresome at times and I really can't explain why. Don't get me wrong, there is some wonderful material. Portrait, Come On Come Over, and Continuum are my favorites. I like his work with Joni Mitchell the best.
Joni Mitchell... Hejira
Joni Mitchell.... Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
Pat Metheny... Bright Size Life
Weather Report.... Black Market (Jaco on most tracks)
Joni Mitchell... Mingus
Jaco.... Birthday Concert
Weather Report... Heavy Weather
Jaco... Jaco
Jaco's playing on DJ's Reckless Daughter is very underrated & underappreciated IMHO, mostly on "Overture-Cotton Avenue", "Talk to Me", "Jericho", and "Off Night Backstreet".
(I've listened to those tunes a seemingly endless number of times, and one thing that really strikes me [ouch!] is how very low his action obviously is, esp. on "Off Night Backstreet".)
My favorites, not necessarily in order:
- his solo debut
- "Bright Size Life" with Metheny
- "Word of Mouth," with Jaco's big band - great, multicolor canvas for his compositions
- Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" and live "8:30"
- Joni's "Mingus"
