Jamiroquai

IMHO, Paul Turner may be not so inspiring as SZ but he's definitely way more "professional". Precise, tight, dynamic, reliable, groovy, all of it. And this contributes greatly to the band's overall sound, maybe not to his own fame. As for me, when JK picked him up, I thought "finally, the band got decent, first-class rythmsection.
Cheers!

I can't say that I see Jamiroquai as a band anymore. With Zender and Toby Smith, there was a particular sound and approach which really suggested "band" to me. With "Synkronized" (and all of the following albums), it seemed to be much more of a JK solo affair with hired guns.

Yeh i agree

JKs very self consumed and it seems as tho his ego just grew over the years, thats probly why SZ left, i bet JK hated any of the band getting any glory.

That may be true, but this isn't the only band that is more a leader and hired guns. Steely Dan has made a career of that - live and recording. That doesn't take away anything for me. If the tune grooves, it grooves, I don't reallly care if it's a "band" or hired gus.

+1 though
However, this backing band sounds fantastic comparing to that certainly flashy and impressive, but in the same time, damn amateur, messy sounding act during 1992-98 if speaking of band' live sound ;)

thanks for pointing out Lettuce they sound great even tho most of the U-Tube clips are of poor quality.
Believe me I've been playing this type of funk since the early 70's and I just spent about a year subbing for a Tower of Power cover band and I can tell you every time they called I would start practicing the tunes on a mon. befor a Sat gig for a couple of hrs a day just to get my chops up to speed. Playing Rocco's lines all night requires a lot of stamina. these guys you all are mentioning "to me" are coming from that same space more or less.
Some of you younger guys should deffinatly check out all the old T.O.P., Ruffus, Chakka Khann, Earth Wind And Fire, Chic.
theres a bunch more I can't remember right now. I know when I was coming up I stole a ton from these bass players as well as the Diety known as Chuck Rainey. lol :bassist:

peace & out for now..........Capt Kirk
