Jamming without an Amp

Fellow low enders...I'm heading overseas to support our military members and will be away from my precious tube amps for six months. I'm carrying my laptop computer and am having one of my non-Fender babies shipped to my location. With weight being an issue I'm not lugging an amp. Does anyone have a suggestion on computer interfaces to replace an amp? There's a ton of options and I haven't got a clue. What I'd like is the ability to play along with ITunes and solo practice.

well, me being w/o an amp for a few months i have found that just play with your music and acoustic.. might want to attack a little bit harder (this will give you more buzz) but thats what i do... when i really want to make sure i'm spot on though i plug in my bass to my microphone input w/ a 1/4 to 1/8 and just play them side by side in garage band. But i'm guessing you don't have a mac so i would just use audacity. Free program, works exactly the same as garage band.
Just record into it and compare.
To make your computer into an amp though that is a different story.... (the only problem i see with that is that your computer speakers may not be up to play the bass guitar) If you know how its going to sound w/ an amp then it should make no difference if you play w/ an amp or w/o an amp.
ps. Bring tools and extra bass strings i bet that stuff is hard to find over there, and since your going over seas your neck might not love that.
Good luck and give my best to any friends you make!
EDIT: are you using a pc or mac? totally will make a difference
