Jason Newsted plays with Metallica again!

Jason's always been my favorite Metallica bassist. He has a great feel and pocket considering how off-time Lars can be on the drums, and when you can actually hear him, his tone sounds massive. Gotta be the Spectors, Alembics, Wals, and then later the Sadowskys. All great bass tones.

have you checked him out on flotsam & jetsam's "doomsday for the deceiver" album? his playing is all over the place (in a good way). so many busy basslines it makes my head spin. he has a cool solo in the song "metalshock". and his tone is pretty cool on that album.

This was nice to see. Newsted definitely got the short end of the stick with this band - seemed to work his tail off and get no respect in the mixes or from the bandleaders. Fans could get past the fact that he wasn't Burton, but the band couldn't?

It also seems strange to me that Trujillo couldn't get off the stage - or even stop posturing up front - for a number or two while Newsted was sitting in. Doesn't speak to a really well-adjusted band, or a player who really feels secure in his position.

Newsted's Sadowsky looks great - love the black-on-black look.

I do. I think you have to take it for what it is though. Is the 90's era stuff metal? Not so much. It's more hard rock, but I still dig it and prefer it to Nickelback or Hinder any day.

This is just me but, I don't see why Rob has to leave. Why can't they both play?

Jason is one of my biggest bass heroes, but I would venture to say that Trujillo is as good if not better. I'm not convinced that Metallica is the best fit for him though.

When he writes them as well as Cliff did, then it means something.

The whole Bass of Doom thing is weird. Has he "released" the bass to the Pastorius family or a museum yet, or is he still waiting for them to buy it back from him at the same price he paid for it?

Why is that? Burton wore all denim and bell bottoms and Trujillo rocks jerseys/skateboard garb. Nothing against Newsted, but he remained pretty neutral or just followed what everyone else did in the group; he did have some killer backup vocals that are sorely missed though... To me though, Rob just adds another dimension to the band or is reinforcing something that was already there; they all used to be clowns back in the Cliff era. Lastly, IMO, the band was never about a look or style (as opposed to these days...), it was just a few average dudes playing some heavy ass, good music...

And to talk of Trujillo's tone is beyond blasphemous, have you ever heard the man live?

Also, speaking of Rob playing Cliff's lines.....

My .02 - Great to see Jason again ! Anyone notice how he seems to be aging much better than them lol ? Guess getting out of that stress factory was good for him :) Still though, the very first time I picked up a bass, I started hammering the Sandman riff...he made me want to play bass. Cliff was a massive talent, and I don`t think Metallica would`ve made it to the top without his early push; his contributions cannot be overstated. And Rob is insane; in fact, he may be the most talented guy in the band (shhh). But, Jason ? He is Metallica to the bone. His tone, his stage presence, his attitude, his backing vocals - he is THE Metallica bassist. Bittersweet seeing him onstage with them again.
