Jazz ashtray clearance question

I was thinking of putting a jazz ashtray and a neck pup cover (as well as the upper thumb rest) on my MIM jazz (blue with tort guard). The question I have is, is there an opening at the back of the bridge cover, or can you still replace a string if you break one? I love the idea of how this would look, but really would only do it if it's not going to limit string changes in the event one breaks.

i guess it's a non issue for me, since i haven't broke a string on a bass since 1974.

Dooood! Lightning will strike you for that. Or a string. Typically, I don't brake strings either, and I always have a spare bass on hand ... meh ... what the heck, you only live once, right? Right.

Just do it, man up. If youre breaking strings like a mad man, you might wanna change your technique.

It's only two screws if you break a string anyways. It's pretty quick to take off. As long as you don't decide you want play over the bridge pickup I think you'll enjoy the look of it on there.

I've broken 2 E strings and a D string, the D string was mid song during a set. Played through it . Looks like i won't ever put ashtrays on my bass though.

For the record, the strings on my jazz are new, but the strings on my Steinberger are 10 years old, if that tells you anything.

Oh, and brake=break. DOH!

The neck pick up cover can look cool, but as you said, the bridge thing is very unpractical.

I started off with a 64 Epiphone Newport, and it had the pickup cover up front and the pull-tab string mute. I guess the older I get, the more I dig that old classic vibe.
