Jazz Bass Neck Replacement advice.

Yeah, basically that's what I want. You know, I had already "stolen" that pic of yours from a thread refering to "look alike basses" or something like that :D

I bought the same neck from the same guy...and it was thicker than the one I replaced. To me, it doesn't feel as 'baseball bat-ish' as a Warwick, but it was not as slim and fast as the (twisted) neck I replaced. Quality was good, although the binding was cracked (and repaired) in 2 places. Nothing you would notice unless very close. I did a leveling, as well as smoothing out some of the ends. (Although its bound, there were a few sharp edges) All in all, a decent neck, and it does look killer with the inlays!

(i havent read all the posts on this thread) but can state=buy a beat up beater bass and work on it,tear it completly down and then clean and reassemble and make it play low,fast and without any fret buzz(of course you'll want to visit here for tips tricks and all that)

you'll then be ready and willing to attack any problem on any bass(unless of course a `warrenty' is at work,don't want to void that) but necks do change with humidity and dif sets of strings will have dif. tensions,,,

glad to see you love your instrument and are willing to buy a new neck for her:D

and if you want to sell your old(fretted jazz bass?) neck=i may be interested,,i have a couple open guitar stands and am considering a fretted J to compliment my fretless one,,anyway,i'm in a hurry PM me if you have a neck for sale( and enjoy the ride;)

I have already made the decision. I'm getting a new neck :D. And about the "old" neck, I want to work on it and make it fretless. But that I haven't decided yet. If I plan to sell it, I will PM you. ;)

Nice choice! Sounds like yours will be basically the same as mine except for the color. About a 2000 model MIM deluxe... Does yours have the 4 pole pickups like this?

I've tried several different sets of pickups in this bass and had a J-retro preeamp in there at one time but put it all back to stock because that was the best sounding setup. I've also bought and sold probably 50 basses since I put this one together and this bass can never leave. The original neck was sort of dead sounding but the Allparts neck I have one there is very resonant and lively. I think you're going to love that bass!

Alright. I know it's been so long since the last post. The neck finally arrived and of course all the other parts: Wilkinson tuners, Fender string guide and a beautiful decal.

I took it with the luthier today and it may be ready in two weeks or so due to the load of work he has.

Hey, where do you get those decals?
I have the Allparts neck with maple fretboard and pearl inlays.
I am very happy with it.

Well... yeah. Question answered. But they ask you in their page not to post the web address anywhere. (I DON'T WANT TO GET INTO LEGAL/ILLEGAL DISCUSSIONS HERE LIKE IN SOOOO MANY OTHER THREADS).

What I can say about this is that the quality is SUPERB as you can see in the pics and the people there is just very nice. Total costumer care, plus the shipping was super fast. Worth the $.

I will echo what others have said, if the neck is twisted there isn't much to do about it. If it is that the frets need a good leveling find a competent luthier to do the work. If you go for a new neck I love Allparts stuff! I use them on my bass builds. Good luck!

It looks like you did a good job on the decal.
Was the decal easy to work with, or was it messy and hard to smooth out?

Thanks, I try my best all the time :smug:

The decal was very easy to work with. I followed the instructions on the page and I used a YouTube video as a guide as well.
You just have to sink the decal in warm water and let it get wet for about 10-15 secs. And just be careful because in the moment the decal touches the water it twists like a worm. Then you just have to take it out the water and carefully slide the white paper from the decal on the headstock surface.

Then you have to apply spray lacquer on the headstock to protect the decal.
